On Sunday afternoon in Dublin, Manchester United will play a preseason friendly against La Liga team Athletic Bilbao to cap off their preparations for the 2023–24 Premier League season.
While Athletic will open their La Liga campaign at home against Real Madrid on August 12, the Red Devils will play Lens at Old Trafford on Saturday as Erik ten Hag's team prepares for their league debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 14.
Despite the fact that winning boosts confidence, Red Devils head coach Ten Hag will be looking for two victories this weekend against Lens and Athletic before welcoming Wolves to Old Trafford in the Premier League on August 14. Ten Hag will not be overly concerned about the results in pre-season.
Currently unknown are Ten Hag's plans for the two friendly this weekend, but it is anticipated that Athletic will be played against a second-string club, with Lens being played against the majority of the first team.
Given their consecutive defeats in their first two league games last season, the Red Devils will understand the significance of getting off to a great start this year. Two victories in their friendlies this weekend would put the club in a positive frame of mind going into the match with Wolves.
Athletic, on the other hand, has played a lot of friendlies this summer—six in all—but they have only succeeded once, a 2-0 victory over Necaxa on July 20.
The match against Man United on Sunday will mark the conclusion of the Basque team's preseason after draws with Racing Santander and Eibar, losses to Gimnastic Torrelavega and Celtic, and draws with Racing Santander and Eibar.
Last season, Ernesto Valverde's team finished eighth in La Liga, two points behind Osasuna in seventh. This year, they'll be hoping to contend for another top-six finish in Europe.
Although it is challenging for Athletic to bolster their roster due to their policy of only signing Basques, Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta has joined from Mallorca and Javier Marton has transferred from Real Sociedad B.
However, players like Inaki Williams and Nico Williams have remained at the club, and the team will be attempting to secure a victory this weekend in advance of their 2023–24 La Liga opener against Real Madrid on August 12. Inigo Martinez was their major departure; the center-back joined Barcelona on a free transfer.
