On Sunday afternoon, Wembley Stadium will play host to the customary Premier League opener between Manchester City and Arsenal, with the Community Shield on the line.

The Citizens come into the match following a 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in their most recent friendly, while their North London rivals are coming off of a victory against Monaco to reclaim the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal was able to quietly celebrate their second-place finish in the 2022–23 Premier League season, which earned them a spot in the Community Shield, whilst Pep Guardiola's treble winners earlier in the summer reveled in their unrestrained celebrations.

The Gunners' league campaign exceeded all expectations set forth for them at the start of the season, and Mikel Arteta's team could still be rewarded for their efforts with a piece of silverware on Sunday. Despite a late defeat that saw Arsenal set a new record of 248 days at the top without engraving their name onto the trophy.

This summer, Arsenal has already added one more trophy to their collection. On Wednesday, they successfully defended the Emirates Cup title against Monaco in a penalty shootout after Monaco held them to a 1-1 draw before Aaron Ramsdale stopped Takumi Minamino's 12-yard attempt.

Arsenal is now vying for their 17th Community Shield title, which would move them past Liverpool and into sole possession of second place behind Man United's 21 victories. They also defeated Barcelona by five goals and the MLS All-Stars by five goals, respectively, either side of a 2-0 loss to Manchester United that could largely be attributed to individual errors.

Arsenal has a history of success in the Community Shield, England's version of the Super Cup, having defeated Liverpool on penalties most recently in 2020. Only two of their previous 10 Community Shield contests have ended in a loss.

Since the Community Shield is so beloved by Arsenal, Arteta won't be fooled into thinking that his team will be the underdog versus Man City, even if the Sky Blues' preseason preparations may use some improvement.

Man City began a tour of Japan and South Korea after winning three trophies in a record-breaking 2022–23 season. The tour began with an eight–goal victory over Yokohama F. Marinos despite being penetrated three times that day.

In Tokyo, Guardiola led Bayern Munich to a 2-1 victory over their former employers, which was a happy reunion for the Catalan. However, four days later, in South Korea, his team lost to Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

Man City has had plenty of time to reflect on that defeat as they seek a seventh Community Shield title, but they have lost the last two Super Cup matches to Leicester City and Liverpool, respectively. Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco did the damage before Ruben Dias's 85th-minute consolation.

Arsene Wenger's team defeated Manuel Pellegrini's Man City 3-0 in the 2015 Community Shield final, but Gooners don't need to be reminded of how their team has performed against the European champions in more recent encounters; the latter have defeated Arteta's men eight times in a row since the 2019–20 FA Cup semifinals at Wembley.
