When they square off at the Dunedin Stadium on Friday, Argentina Women and South Africa Women will both be eager to get off to a strong start at the Women's World Cup 2023.

Italy narrowly defeated the South Americans in their inaugural match, and South Africa was defeated by Sweden.

Argentina's chances of reaching the knockout stages for the first time were dashed in their tournament opener after failing to advance from the group stages in each of their previous three World Cup outings.

In the 87th minute, Cristiana Girelli scored to give Italy a 1-0 victory over La Albiceleste in their Matchday One encounter.

With two ties and eight losses in their 10 games during the tournament, Argentina is still without a victory at the World Cup finals.

They can at least draw encouragement from their recent defensive efforts, as they have only allowed two goals in their last seven international games.

Argentina will undoubtedly enter Friday's match as the favorites because they are placed 26 places higher than South Africa in the FIFA World Rankings.
South Africa ran Sweden close in their narrow 2-1 loss on Sunday, proving that they will not be taken lightly.

After the break, Hildah Magaia gave South Africa the lead, but Fridolina Rolfo equalized the score in the 65th minute.

The Banyana Banyana came agonizingly close to earning a point, but Amanda Ilestedt's winning goal in the final minute prevented them from doing so.

In their remaining two group games against Argentina and Italy, South Africa will feel confident after putting on a strong effort against the second-ranked team in the world.

South Africa will attempt to get their first points in the World Cup finals on Thursday after losing all four of their games.
